Casual Wedding Reception Entertainment: Beyond the DJ

Don't get me wrong - a great DJ can absolutely make a wedding. But when you're planning a casual reception (especially during daytime or at a relaxed venue like a pub, garden, or brewery), you might want entertainment that feels less "Saturday night club" and more "fancy garden party."

Who Started the White Wedding Dress?

Ask a room of wedding guests who started the white wedding dress and most of them will say Queen Victoria. They are right, sort of. Victoria did not invent white for brides, but her wedding in February 1840 is why white went from an option for the very rich to the dress almost every bride in Britain wanted.

Where Does the Word Honeymoon Come From?

The word honeymoon does not come from a month of drinking honey mead. The earliest record of it, from 1546, is a joke about how quickly newlyweds stop being sweet on each other: honey now, then it changes like the moon.

Where Does "Here Comes the Bride" Come From?

"Here Comes the Bride" is the Bridal Chorus from Richard Wagner's opera Lohengrin, first staged in 1850. In the opera it is not an entrance march at all: the wedding guests sing it after the wedding, as they lead the couple to their bedroom. Then the marriage falls apart before the night is out.

Why Does the Groom Carry the Bride Over the Threshold?

The oldest explanation we have for carrying a bride over the threshold is Roman, and it is not about luck or evil spirits. Around AD 100 the writer Plutarch said Roman brides were lifted into their new home because the first Roman brides, the Sabine women, were carried off by force. And according to Plutarch, it wasn't even the groom who did the lifting.

Why Did Eloping Couples Race to Gretna Green?

Eloping English couples raced to Gretna Green because it was the first easy stop over the Scottish border, and Scottish law let a couple marry simply by declaring it in front of two witnesses. No banns, no licence, no parents' consent, no church. The famous blacksmiths had no special power at all; they just provided the witnesses and charged a fee.

Where Does "a Month's Salary on the Ring" Come From?

"Spend a month's salary on the engagement ring" is not an old tradition. It comes from advertising: a campaign for the diamond company De Beers that started in the 1930s, run by an American agency, which suggested a month's pay and later raised the figure to two months in the US and three in Japan.

Why Were June Brides Said to Be Better Off Than May Ones?

It was never the bath. June brides were said to be better off than May ones because of an old Roman belief that May was a bad month to marry, which Ovid wrote down about two thousand years ago. The story that everyone had their yearly bath in May, and so still smelled fresh in June, is made up. It first turns up in a chain email in 1999.

Who Came Up With the Idea That Women Can Propose in a Leap Year?

Nobody really knows. The custom that a woman may propose in a leap year is real and old, but where it began has never been pinned down. The famous answer, a law made by Queen Margaret of Scotland in 1288, has no record behind it, and the queen it names was a little girl living in Norway.

Where Does the Seven-Year Itch Come From?

Before it meant a restless marriage, "the seven-year itch" was an itchy skin disease, usually scabies, that people in America said you were stuck with for seven years. An advert was already offering a cure for it by 1839. The marriage meaning turns up much later, with a 1952 Broadway comedy called The Seven Year Itch, and the 1955 film of it took that meaning around the world.

Why Did So Many Couples in England and Wales Marry in March?

In the 1950s and 60s, March was the most popular month to get married in England and Wales. It came top every single year from 1950 to 1968, and the reason was income tax: a husband got the married man's allowance for the whole tax year, however late in it he married, and the tax year ended on 5 April. Today the top month is August (14.3% of weddings in 2023, according to the Office for National Statistics), and June, the obvious guess, did not come top in a single year of the ONS monthly figures from 1947 to 2011.

Why Was the 1923 Royal Wedding Not on the Radio?

The 1923 royal wedding was kept off the radio because Westminster Abbey said no. The brand-new BBC asked to broadcast the service, and the reason on record had nothing to do with the equipment: the Abbey worried the service would be heard by "a considerable number of persons in an irreverent manner", and that it "might even be received by persons in Public Houses with their hats on". In other words, the pub.

Where Does "Can't Help Falling in Love" Really Come From?

The tune of "Can't Help Falling in Love" is borrowed from "Plaisir d'amour", an old French love song with music by Jean-Paul-Égide Martini and words first printed in 1784, in a story by Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian. In that story the words are sung by a young goatherd on the day his sweetheart marries his rival. So one of Britain's favourite first dances borrows its tune from a song written for the man who lost the bride.
